Overview

OwnTone Sync ("the App") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how the App handles your data.

Data Collection

The App does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on external servers. All data remains on your device and your personal OwnTone server.

Data Stored Locally

The App stores the following data locally on your Android device:

  • Server Connection Details: Your OwnTone server URL and connection settings
  • Music Files: Audio files downloaded from your OwnTone server
  • Sync History: Records of sync operations performed by the App
  • App Preferences: Your settings and preferences within the App

Permissions

The App requests the following Android permissions:

  • Storage Access: Required to save music files to your device's Music folder
  • Internet Access: Required to connect to your OwnTone server and download music files
  • Background Sync (Premium only): Required to perform scheduled syncs while the app is not active
  • Notification Access (Optional, Premium only): Required to track playback events (play/skip) from other music players. This permission allows the app to read media notifications to detect when you play or skip songs. The app ONLY reads media-related notifications and does not access or store any other notification content. This data is only sent to your personal OwnTone server to update playback statistics for smart playlists.

Network Communication

The App only communicates with:

  • Your personal OwnTone server (using the URL you provide)
  • Google Play Services (for app updates and licensing verification)
  • Google AdMob (Free version only - for serving advertisements)

No user data, listening habits, or personal information is transmitted to the developer or any third parties.

Third-Party Services

Free Version: The free version includes advertisements served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect certain information for ad personalization. Please review Google's Privacy Policy for details.

Premium Version: The premium version does not include advertisements and does not use AdMob.

Your OwnTone Server

All music files are downloaded directly from your personal OwnTone server. The App does not act as an intermediary or proxy for this data. You are responsible for the security and privacy settings of your OwnTone server.

Data Security

All data is stored locally on your device using Android's standard security mechanisms. The App does not implement additional encryption as all communication is with your personal server.

Data Deletion

You can delete all App data at any time by:

  • Uninstalling the App (removes all app data)
  • Manually deleting files from the Music folder on your device
  • Using Android's "Clear Data" option in App Settings

Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any information from children. The App is not directed at children under 13 years of age.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a new "Last Updated" date.
